The question is not: "Is Israel the same as South Africa?"
It is: "do Israel's actions meet the international definition of what apartheid is?"
The word apartheid refers to any institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over another. The "Israeli Arabs" - about 1.4 million Palestinian Christian and Muslim citizens who live in Israel - vote in elections. But they are a subordinated and marginalized minority. A Star of David on Israel's flag symbolically tells Palestinian citizens: "You do not belong." Israel's Law of Return grants rights of automatic citizenship to Jews anywhere in the world, while those rights are denied to 750,000 Palestinian refugees, and their descendants, who were forced or fled in fear from their homes in what became Israel in 1948.
Even members of the Israeli political elite use the term apartheid to describe the system they administer -- the latest being the current defense minister (and former prime minister) Ehud Barak who stated: "If there is only one political entity, named Israel, it will end up being either non-Jewish or non-democratic... If the Palestinians vote in elections, it is a binational state, and if they don't, it is an apartheid state." more
“The Jews took Israel from the Arabs after the Arabs had lived there for a thousand years. Israel like South Africa, is an apartheid state” (Rand Daily Mail, 23 Novemeber 1961). Those were not the words of Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Tutu or Ruth First, but were uttered by none other than the architect of apartheid itself, racist Prime Minister, Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd.
BDS IN CALIFORNIA!

The two-state solution to the conflict in Israel/Palestine has lost credibility because the conditions imposed by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territories have made it impossible. Yet the alternative–a unified democratic state such as was created in South Africa – contradicts how the world understands the basic formula for a peaceful resolution, which assumes that Israeli Jews and Palestinians cannot live together peacefully and must be physically and politically divided into two independent states. more
"Blood And Religion" The Unmasking of the Jewish and Democratic State
Published in 2006, Jonathan Cook’s book "Blood and Religion: The Unmasking of the Jewish and Democratic State" is the rarely told story of the plight of Israel's 1.4 million Arab citizens, the discrimination against them, the reasons why, and the likely future consequences from it. more
A racism outside of language: Israel's apartheid
When it is leveled at Israel, the charge of apartheid generates not counter-argument backed by counter-evidence, but rather walls of sheer stony denial, if not inarticulate eruptions of blind rage, as though either denial or sheer fury could permanently forestall argument. more
